Alright. As a book that captured my attention for months on end and always hyped me up as I wrote it, making it a good cover was quite important to me. However, back then, I was a total amateur at designing book covers, and I swear I created dozens of past versions that were equivalent to... well, rubbish, and simply don't remain in my files anymore. This cover was created by another Wattpad user; I contacted him/her via the Wattpad community forums(it doesn't exist anymore) and the cover was made in 3 days. I was a bit disappointed that my book's cover was a cover someone else had made for me(I wanted it to be self-made), but still, the Wattpad user managed to fulfill the overall things I wanted my Exptraite cover to be.
The barbed wire is meant to mean lack of freedom, which Alex Mars is submitted to at first in the story. It also means the discrimination and firm line between people who are against each other. As much as the story itself has several meanings and symbols within it, they are also meant to point to all kinds of discrimination that were going hot around the globe during 2020(remember the BLM movement?).
Well, the overall greyish tone means that the Expatriate isn't, of course, a happy fairy tale, but actually a dystopian and darkly humorous tale.
